THE ASK

You will be designing a film title sequence and rolling credits in response to a film that is being developed by Toronto Film School student. You will need to adhere to the creative direction of the film as well as respond to the genre, mood and message of the film by expressing the story through motion graphic and type design. Building a colour story and style that in line with the film’s themes and message.

THE APPROACH

The short film, 9th Circle, is a thriller with sub-genres in suspense as well as dark fantasy. While the film is not specifically horror it is implied by the film concept and touches on it implicitly in the dialogue and in the story model. The film’s mood, genre and message is reinforced by the production’s use of colour, lighting, sound, and camera angles that aid in telling the narrative of the short film. The opening credits and rolling credit’s colour palette, typography, camera angles as well as lighting match and support the stylist choices of the short film, creating consistency between the motion graphic and the short film. They reinforce the film’s genre, mood, and message creating cohension between the two elements.
